A chiropractor is generally known to treat conditions of the spine. Back and neck pain are common complaints people have when they seek pain management treatment from a chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment is broader than just back and neck pain. A chiropractor treats disorders related to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that most people wouldn’t naturally think of seeking chiropractic treatment for, but is nonetheless something that we help our patients with. Chiropractors cannot cure neuropathy, but we can help alleviate the pain it causes and treat the other symptoms.

Peripheral Neuropathy

The peripheral nervous system is a network of nerves that communicate signals between the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body. Some of these signals are sensory, such as being able to distinguish hot from cold, but there are also other internal signals from motor nerves and autonomic nerves that are vital to the functioning of the human body. When nerves become damaged, the signals they are meant to send get disrupted. This can be detrimental to a person’s life and health. There are many types of neuropathy and several different types of nerves that can be affected.

The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are as many as the causes. They include mild symptoms of numbness in the hands, feet, arms, and legs or muscle weakness and skin sensitivity. Other more severe symptoms include sharp stabbing pain or paralysis. Patients with neuropathy may experience bladder and bowel problems, heat intolerance and sweating, and blood pressure problems.

Chiropractic Treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy

Because the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are many, there are many ways a chiropractor can treat this disorder. Spinal decompression is one of the therapies that help patients experience relief. This is a form of traction of the spine where the spine is stretched. It has been shown to be effective in relieving pressure and even in regenerating compressed discs. This allows compressed nerves to heal, reducing future potential instances.

Chiropractors also employ manual spinal manipulation to correct spinal misalignment. Misalignment of the bones in the spine can place pressure on the nerves along the spinal column, adding to or even causing peripheral neuropathy.
